Innovation driver for drinking water systems

Press, don’t stress

Geberit first enters the drinking water system market in the 1990s with multilayer composite pipes. The introduction of press connections for multilayer pipes and the Geberit FlowFit system launched in 2021 underline Geberit's innovative role in the sanitary industry. A retrospective on the 150th anniversary.

Potable water usually flows through lead, copper or steel pipes until the end of the 1980s. Then plastic pipes began to be used. At that time, the recently introduced multilayer composite pipes were a new technology in the sanitary industry. Several layers of plastic and metal are combined. These pipes combine the advantages of both materials: the stability of metal and the corrosion resistance and straightforward handling of plastic.

Geberit was one of the pioneers when the company launched the Mepla composite pipe system – short for metal-plastic – in 1990 as a recognised plastics processor. It marked Geberit's first foray into the drinking water market.

Premiere: Press fittings for plastic pipes
Geberit is constantly improving the system. Originally, the Mepla pipes were connected with metal screw fittings. This is unhandy and time-consuming, especially for larger pipe diameters. Geberit engineers therefore applied the proven principle of press connections to plastic pipes and launched press fittings for multilayer composite pipes on the market in 1992 – a world first. However, the industry was initially extremely sceptical about press fittings – initially made of metal, later of plastic. Plumbers first had to be convinced of the new technology of pressing plastic pipes. Geberit achieves this with comprehensive training and demonstrations of the simpler and faster installation technology.

Pressing metal pipes
The pressing of drinking water pipes is well known in the industry: The pressing of metal pipes was patented back in 1964. The German steel company Mannesmann recognises the potential and launches Mapress – a portmanteau of Mannesmann and press technology – a stainless steel system consisting of press fittings and thin-walled pipes. In 2004, Geberit takes over Mapress and expands its portfolio with a high-quality supply system that opens up new markets, for example for industrial applications.

Evolution never stopps
Geberit is shaping the sanitary industry with innovations. The Geberit FlowFit supply system, which will be launched on the market in 2021, sets new standards with its simple and safe installation. The fittings of the multilayer composite pipes are flow-optimised and can be pressed laterally, which makes installation easier. Geberit FlowFit also requires fewer tools. The project is the most expensive development project in Geberit's history to date – and also one of the most ambitious.

The lateral pressing of Geberit FlowFit makes the plumbers' work considerably easier.
